聯(lián)合國環(huán)境規(guī)劃署將每年的6月5日確定為“世界環(huán)境日”，希望通過“世界環(huán)境日”主題讓人類認(rèn)識到可持續(xù)發(fā)展和公平發(fā)展的重要性，最終使全人類擁有一個(gè)安全而繁榮的未來。
2006年世界環(huán)境日慶典在阿爾及利亞首都阿爾及爾舉行。這是世界環(huán)境日慶典首次在北非國家舉行。2006年世界環(huán)境日的主題為“沙漠和荒漠化--莫使旱地變荒漠”。
