這個短語的來源至少有兩種，其中之一是說，早在超市出現(xiàn)之前，人們通常在當(dāng)?shù)氐氖袌鲑I菜和家禽。在一些特殊的場合（如節(jié)日盛宴），乳豬是采購單上一樣很搶手的食物。由于乳豬會亂動，當(dāng)顧客挑選好并結(jié)賬后，商人為了運送方便就把豬塞進一個帆布口袋（poke）里遞給顧客。
然而，奸商有時會利用顧客一時走神，把流浪貓冒充乳豬放進袋子里。直到顧客回家，“把貓從袋子里拿出來”（let the cat out of the bag），才發(fā)現(xiàn)這個騙局。所以這個詞組意味著是一個意外的、但通常令人討厭的發(fā)現(xiàn)。據(jù)說這也是諺語“不要買裝在袋子里的豬”（don't buy a pig in a poke）的由來，也就是“不要不看現(xiàn)貨就買東西”的意思。

a white elephant 這個短語是來源于印度，由于印度人是很崇拜大象的，對于大象尤其是白象視若神靈。印度規(guī)定，白象是不可以宰殺、干活的，擁有白象的人家要好好地養(yǎng)著它，不可以虐待它，直到它死去。所以人們將白象視為一種累贅，這也就是 white elephant 的由來。
由于 white elephant 有上述的意思，因而出現(xiàn)了 a white elephant sale（白象義賣）。不過這種以慈善為目的的義賣，所賣的不是白象，而是有心人士所捐出的家里不再需要之物品。
43. get out of bed on the wrong side 心情不佳
The Prime Minister must have got out of bed on the wrong side this morning.
