這個短語的來源至少有兩種,其中之一是說,早在超市出現(xiàn)之前,人們通常在當(dāng)?shù)氐氖袌鲑I菜和家禽。在一些特殊的場合(如節(jié)日盛宴),乳豬是采購單上一樣很搶手的食物。由于乳豬會亂動,當(dāng)顧客挑選好并結(jié)賬后,商人為了運送方便就把豬塞進一個帆布口袋(poke)里遞給顧客。
然而,奸商有時會利用顧客一時走神,把流浪貓冒充乳豬放進袋子里。直到顧客回家,“把貓從袋子里拿出來”(let the cat out of the bag),才發(fā)現(xiàn)這個騙局。所以這個詞組意味著是一個意外的、但通常令人討厭的發(fā)現(xiàn)。據(jù)說這也是諺語“不要買裝在袋子里的豬”(don't buy a pig in a poke)的由來,也就是“不要不看現(xiàn)貨就買東西”的意思。

a white elephant 這個短語是來源于印度,由于印度人是很崇拜大象的,對于大象尤其是白象視若神靈。印度規(guī)定,白象是不可以宰殺、干活的,擁有白象的人家要好好地養(yǎng)著它,不可以虐待它,直到它死去。所以人們將白象視為一種累贅,這也就是 white elephant 的由來。
由于 white elephant 有上述的意思,因而出現(xiàn)了 a white elephant sale(白象義賣)。不過這種以慈善為目的的義賣,所賣的不是白象,而是有心人士所捐出的家里不再需要之物品。
