Jack: Hi, Sally. What are you doing?
Sally: I'm looking at old family pictures.
Jack: Why did you get those out?
Sally: To help Emily with her homework. She asked me to find some pictures of her relatives.
Jack: Can't Emily do that herself?
Sally: No. She doesn't know who all these people in the photos are.
Jack: I'm not sure I do, either! So why does Emily need these pictures?
Sally: Emily has to make a family tree.
Jack: With pictures?
Sally: Yes. I'm looking for photos of Grandpa George and Grandma Mabel.
Jack: Did you find any?
Sally: I think so. Isn't this Grandpa George?
Jack: Uh, I'm not sure. It could be his brother.
Sally: True. I wish there were names on these photos.
Jack: Me too. Next time I visit Mom, I'll take these pictures with me.
Sally: Good idea. Mom will remember who's who.
講解：
1. 對話中Sally和Jack在翻看家庭老照片。Sally為什么會把這些老照片翻出來呢？原來她要幫Emily完成她的作業(yè)，也就是找一些親戚的照片。help with something 這個詞組表示“幫助，協(xié)助”，He let Tom help with the washing-up. 他讓Tom幫忙洗碗。那么對話中出現(xiàn)的help someone with something，表示“幫助某人做某事”，例如：I can help you with the packing. 我可以幫你整理行李。
2. 為什么Emily不自己找呢？因為照片上的一些人她也不認(rèn)識。Jack也不確定自己都認(rèn)識照片里的人。那么Emily要這些照片做什么呢？原來她的作業(yè)就是要用這些照片做一個family tree也就是“家譜圖”。在上節(jié)課我們已經(jīng)對family tree做了介紹。我們來說說photo這個詞，它是在口語當(dāng)中比較常用的，比較正式的詞是photograph，不過在美國口語中，表示“相片，照片”的比較常用的詞還是picture。組成的短語就是take a picture of sb./sth. 比如說，旅游的時候，我們經(jīng)常會請別人給我們照相，就可以說，Can you take a picture of us? 你能幫我們照張像嗎？還有一個習(xí)語，take a good picture，表示“上相，上鏡”，還有一個專門的
形容詞來表示這個意義，就是photogenic ，例如：I'm not very photogenic. 我照相不大上相。Sally想找Grandpa George and Grandma Mabel 的照片，但是好像沒有什么結(jié)果。
3. 因為他們也不知道照片上的人是不是Grandpa George，也許是他的弟弟也說不定。看來這張照片是夠老的了。要是照片上寫了名字就好了。I wish there were names on these photos. 這是一個虛擬語氣的句子，表示與現(xiàn)在事實相反的愿望。
4. Jack建議帶這些照片去問問他們的媽媽，Sally很同意，因為媽媽肯定會知道誰是誰。
